30 nov 2023 · This study utilizes measurements from Mount Lao, a coastal mountain in eastern China, and an observation-based chemical box model (OBM) to examine HONO budgets.
Abstract. Nitrous acid (HONO), a vital precursor of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH), has been extensively investigated to understand its characteristics and formation mechanisms. However, discerning fundamental mechanisms across diverse environments remains challenging. This study utilizes measurements from Mount Lao, a coastal mountain in eastern China, and an observation-based chemical box model (OBM) to examine HONO budgets and their subsequent impacts on atmospheric oxidizing capacity. The model incorporates additional HONO sources, including direct emissions, heterogeneous conversions of NO2 on aerosol and ground surfaces, and particulate nitrate photolysis. The observed mean HONO concentration was 0.46 ± 0.37 ppbv. The updated model reproduced daytime HONO concentrations well during dust and photochemical pollution events. During dust events, daytime HONO formation was dominated by photo-enhanced heterogeneous reactions of NO2 on aerosol surfaces (> 50 %), whereas particulate nitrate photolysis (34 %) prevailed during photochemical pollution events. Nevertheless, the model uncovers a significant unidentified marine HONO source in a “sea case”, with its HONO production rate reaching up to 0.70 ppbv h−1 at noon. Without considering this unidentified source, an extraordinarily high photolysis coefficient of nitrate and/or a heterogeneous uptake coefficient of NO2 would be required to match observed HONO concentrations. This missing marine HONO source affected the peak O...

26 jul 2024 · This study improves our understanding of the chemical diversity and environmental health effects of atmospheric carbonyls.
Abstract. Carbonyls have an important effect on atmospheric chemistry and human health because of their high electrophilicity. Here, high-throughput screening of carbonyl molecules in complex aerosol samples was achieved by combining targeted derivatization with non-targeted analysis using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Results showed that water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in PM2.5 contains a large variety of carbonyls (5147 in total), accounting for 17.6 % of all identified organic molecules. Compared with non-carbonyl molecules, carbonyl molecules are more abundant in winter than in summer and have unique molecular composition and chemical parameters. For the first time, a significant positive correlation was found between the abundance of carbonyl molecules and the dithiothreitol (DTT) activities of WSOM, and the elimination of the carbonyl group remarkably reduced the DTT activities, highlighting the pivotal role of carbonyls in determining the oxidative potential (OP) of organic aerosol. Among various molecules, oxidized aromatic compounds containing the carbonyl group produced in winter contributed more to the enhancement of DTT activity, which could be used as potential markers of atmospheric oxidative stress. This study improves our understanding of the chemical diversity and environmental health effects of atmospheric carbonyls, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies to mitigate the health risks associated with carbon...

20 mrt 2023 · 4. Discussion and Conclusions. Multiple evidence suggests that numerous gut microbes metabolites may contribute to host metabolism, such as ...
2-hydroxybutyric acid (2HB) serves as an important regulatory factor in a variety of diseases. The circulating level of 2HB in serum is significantly higher in multiple diseases, such as cancer and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, there is currently no systematic study on 2HB-producing bacteria that demonstrates whether gut bacteria contribute to the circulating 2HB pool. To address this question, we used BLASTP to reveal the taxonomic profiling of 2HB-producing bacteria in the human microbiome, which are mainly distributed in the phylum Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. In vitro experiments showed that most gut bacteria (21/32) have at least one path to produce 2HB, which includes Aspartic acid, methionine, threonine, and 2-aminobutyric acid. Particularly, Fusobacterium nucleatum has the strongest ability to synthesize 2HB, which is sufficient to alter colon 2HB concentration in mice. Nevertheless, neither antibiotic (ABX) nor Fusobacterium nucleatum gavage significantly affected mouse serum 2HB levels during the time course of this study. Taken together, our study presents the profiles of 2HB-producing bacteria and demonstrates that gut microbiota was a major contributor to 2HB concentration in the intestinal lumen but a relatively minor contributor to serum 2HB concentration.
